In this episode of the Digital Insurance Podcast, I talk to Andres Lehtmets, Senior InsurTech Expert at the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA).

EIOPA represents the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority. It is an agency of the European Union and is based in Frankfurt am Main.

EIOPA ensures the quality and stability of the financial system with a focus on customer needs, explains Andres. He describes the daily work at EIOPA as follows: "A lot of time is spent in workshops. The focus is on new technologies and business models that are entering the market - "market monitoring", as Andres puts it. In the end, the question is always: What measures - "supervisory approaches" - should be taken?

Current topics include artificial intelligence, open finance, open insurance and blockchain. Asked about Open Insurance, Andres explains that the topic is not new. Data in insurers is old hat. What is new, however, is the amount of data and today's computing power to make it usable. Open Insurance definitely brings benefits: higher efficiency, more transparency and improved product development. Together with the potential risks for consumers, a balanced view of the whole issue needs to be taken.

In dieser Folge des Digital Insurance Podcast spreche ich mit Andres Lehtmets, Senior InsurTech Experte bei European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA).

EIOPA stellt die Europäische Aufsichtsbehörde für das Versicherungswesen und die betriebliche Altersversorgung dar. Es handelt sich um eine Agentur der Europäischen Union und hat ihren Sitz in Frankfurt am Main.

Die EIOPA stellt die Qualität und Stabilität des Finanzsystems mit dem Schwerpunkt auf Kundenbedürfnisse sicher, erklärt Andres. Die tägliche Arbeit bei EIOPA beschreibt er so: Es wird viel Zeit in Workshops verbracht. Im Fokus stehen neue Technologien und Geschäftsmodelle, die auf den Markt drängen - “market monitoring”, wie es Andres formuliert. Am Ende geht es stets um die Frage: Welche Maßnahmen - “supervisory approaches” - sind zu treffen?

Aktuelle Themen sind u. a. Künstliche Intelligenz, Open Finance, Open Insurance und Blockchain. Auf Open Insurance angesprochen, erklärt mir Andres, dass das Thema nicht neu ist. Daten in Versicherern ist ein alter Hut. Was hingegen neu ist, ist die Menge an Daten und die heutige “computing power", diese nutzbar zu machen. Open Insurance bringt definitiv Vorzüge mit: höhere Effizienz, mehr Transparenz und eine verbesserte Produktentwicklung. Zusammen mit den potenziellen Risiken für Konsumenten sei eine balancierte Sichtweise auf das ganze Thema einzunehmen.
